Alicka Ampry-Samuel

Regional Administrator, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development

Alicka Ampry-Samuel – U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development

Regional Administrator Alicka Ampry-Samuel presides over HUD’s activities in NY and NJ. Appointed in January 2022 by President Biden, Ampry-Samuel oversees over $6 billion in programs and activities across field offices in NYC, Albany, Buffalo, and Newark. Ampry-Samuel engages with stakeholders to increase the housing supply, reduce homelessness, and utilize $595 million awarded in American Rescue Plan funding. Prior to HUD, Ampry-Samuel served as a New York City Council Member and chaired the Public Housing Committee.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
I grew up in public housing and understand the importance of providing families with affordable housing. I know what it means to grow up with a stable home and will do all I can to create opportunities for the next generation. We’ve seen an increase in population growth and the need to develop more housing units for families who want to remain in the neighborhoods where they were raised. It’s a labor of love.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
My favorite neighborhood in NYC is Brownsville in Brooklyn because it’s a community that’s full of rich history and families with a strong sense of pride. I was a fourth generation Brownsville resident and heard countless stories about my community, carried down from my great-grandmother Sadie Mae who migrated to Brooklyn from North Carolina in the 1930s.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
For years, I walked past empty lots imagining housing units, entertainment space, and a center for young girls. I eventually became a member of the NYC Council and helped push for a Brownsville Community Development Plan. As a result, and pushing community engagement, four empty lots will soon be home to housing for seniors, artists, families, along with a business incubator hub, restaurant, a black box theater, retail space, and the Brownsville Girls Club.

Alexa Avilés

Council Member, New York City Council

Alexa Avilés – NYC Council

Council Member Alexa Avilés represents Red Hook, Sunset Park and parts of Boro Park, Dyker Heights, and Windsor Terrace in the New York City Council. She is a proud New Yorker who lives in Sunset Park with her husband Frankie and their two daughters, who attend New York City public schools. Before her election to City Council, Alexa’s career spanned almost three decades in the not-for-profit and philanthropic sectors.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
As a lifelong Brooklynite, it is the honor of my life to serve in the City Council for District 38 in South Brooklyn. The communities I represent, Sunset Park, Red Hook and portions of Dyker Heights, Bensonhurst, and Borough Park exemplify the best of New York City, its diversity, and history. I’m committed to fighting to keep our neighborhoods affordable, push back against displacement, and stand up for our people.

Ian Bel

Managing Principal and CEO, Olive Tree Holdings

Ian Bel – Olive Tree Holdings

At Olive Tree, Ian Bel oversees the company and all affiliate platforms – including Olive Tree Affordable Housing, and Olive Tree Ventures, the PropTech venture investment arm of Olive Tree Holdings. Under Ian’s leadership, Olive Tree has acquired and transformed over 16,000 units of workforce and affordable housing communities across 9 states and has deployed over $250 Million in capital expenditures to enhance the lifestyles of its residents.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
When I was a student at Binghamton University, I was exposed to landlords taking advantage of residents in the nearby campus housing options, offering poor customer service and living conditions for renters. As a result, in 2005, I invested in my first home and scaled my investment knowledge into a business – purchasing multifamily communities in the area, renovating them, and providing a greater quality of life for students in the area.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
Union Square is a vibrant and diverse neighborhood located in the heart of New York City, and in my opinion, it’s one of the best places to spend time. With a vibrant atmosphere, bustling markets, and expansive green space – Union Square Park – this area fuses together the serene backdrop of greenery with a lively atmosphere of entertainment.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
In 2021, our leadership team formed Olive Tree Ventures, the standalone PropTech/ConTech venture investment arm of Olive Tree Holdings. Our goal was to create a dedicated ventures group to invest in built-world technologies. I have been focusing on shaping the companies’ investment strategy alongside the ventures team, creating unique initiatives like the Strategic Partner Network, a one-of-a-kind resource and knowledge-sharing network connecting traditional real estate & construction stakeholders with vetted technology solutions.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
Prior to working in real estate, Eric owned a live event company. After 9/11, he decided to make a career change.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
I studied Urban Planning and was fortunate to meet some of the major real estate owners, developers and builders early in my career in communications. I loved watching buildings going up in New York City and I have had some incredible mentors in various areas within the real estate industry.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
New York City is filled with great neighborhoods that all feel different and unique. The West Village is still my favorite neighborhood but I also love spending a day in Soho, Flatiron/Nomad or any of the exciting areas in Downtown New York. I also represent the Avenue of the Americas Association and have loved watching Midtown thrive and evolve following the Pandemic.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
Despite a changing market in both residential and commercial real estate today, we have been fortunate to work with real estate owners across the country to develop new hospitality and amenity programs for residential developments as well as for offices. We have supported Howard Hughes as they have grown some of the most creative residential and mixed-use developments in America and we are currently supporting BXP and RXR in bringing amenities to their office tenants.

Jeff Blau

CEO, The Related Companies

SSL- Workout

Jeff Blau is CEO of Related Companies. For the past 25+ years he has been responsible for directing and overseeing new developments worth over $60 billion in virtually every sector of the real estate industry. In his position as CEO, he is responsible for the strategic direction of the company, overall management of the firm, the pursuit of new development opportunities, and corporate acquisitions and financing activities across all business platforms.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
My real estate career started when I was at the University of Michigan. There were lots of different ways that I tried to be entrepreneurial in college, but real estate was the one that really took hold. I started investing in and buying small buildings – and the rest kind of grew from there. I’ve had some great influences and mentors along the way who helped me understand and grow in the industry.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
This is an easy one – Hudson Yards. What our Related team has built at Hudson Yards is not just New York City’s newest neighborhood, it is now the heartbeat of Manhattan. Hudson Yards is the commercial center of the city with office, retail, and restaurants. And it’s that mixed-use campus that makes our residential properties here so attractive to buyers and renters. I’ll also just say it’s hard to beat the views we’ve got.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
Our project at Willets Point – in partnership with Sterling and NYCFC – is going to turn a blight into a vibrant community in Queens. We’re so proud of Mayor Adams leadership getting us to the point where we’re going to deliver 2,500 100% affordable housing units. In addition, NYCFC is going to build our city’s first soccer-specific stadium. We’ve been working for years on Willets and it’s incredibly exciting to see it move forward.

Lisa Bova-Hiatt

Interim CEO, New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA)

Lisa Bova-Hiatt – NYCHA

As Interim CEO of NYCHA, Lisa Bova-Hiatt is at the helm of the largest public housing authority in the nation. Before assuming this position in September 2022, she served for over two years as NYCHA’s general counsel. She was formerly executive director of the Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery, overseeing the investment of $4.5 billion to rebuild NYS following Superstorm Sandy, and was a senior attorney for nearly 20 years at the NYC Law Department specializing in real estate acquisition.

Speak to your passion for public service and your current role.
My 25-year career as a leader in government is rooted in my commitment to serving my fellow New Yorkers, particularly at moments of crisis. I’m especially passionate about housing and real estate in NYC and have worked on the development and implementation of related policies from nearly every post I’ve held. I believe in public and affordable housing and remain committed to preserving this resource and providing a better quality of life to residents.

What is the size and scope of NYCHA, and why is it important to New York?
Created in 1935 to provide decent, affordable housing for low- and moderate-income New Yorkers, NYCHA has a housing stock that spans all five boroughs and is a city within a city. It’s one of the last remaining sources of truly affordable housing — serving over 339,000 residents through conventional public housing (Section 9), over 29,000 residents at PACT/ RAD developments, and over 92,000 families through federal rent subsidies (Section 8 Leased Housing Program).

Describe your priorities as NYCHA’s Interim CEO.
Following decades of federal disinvestment, NYCHA has a $40 billion capital need that grows by $1 billion a year. As Interim CEO, I am working diligently to address budgetary issues amid a difficult fiscal outlook, overseeing the authority’s continued transformation, and utilizing every available tool (including PACT, Comprehensive Modernization and the newly-established Public Housing Preservation Trust) to preserve and renovate buildings in the portfolio – directly improving conditions for hundreds of thousands of residents.

Jim Capalino

Founder and CEO, Capalino

Jim Capalino – Capalino

Jim Capalino is one of New York’s premier urban problem-solving strategists. In 1977, Jim co-managed Congressman Koch’s successful mayoral campaign, and, at 28, was named Commissioner of the Department of General Services, setting a record for youngest commissioner in city history. As founder and CEO of Capalino, Jim has overseen the growth of New York’s leading urban strategy firm, responsible for developing and executing forward-thinking strategies to navigate the complex political, business, and regulatory landscape.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
My appointment to Commissioner of the Department of General Services (a 2,000+ employee, $750 million agency) by Mayor Koch. I managed the City’s enormous real estate portfolio, which included commercial, residential, industrial, and vacant sites. Understanding all the challenges and opportunities of getting things done in NYC, I became a key strategist at Capalino to launch some of the city’s most widely recognized developments including The High Line, MetroTech, Hudson Yards, and Coney Island.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
East Harlem, where I live, is my favorite neighborhood. The diversity of cultures and backgrounds make it vibrant.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
As a founding board member of Friends of the High Line, this is one of my principal NYC civic engagements. I am focused on expanding its education programs and ensuring people see the key role it played in the growth of NYC’s economy.

Aaron Carr

Founder and Executive Director, Housing Rights Initiative

Aaron Carr – Housing Rights Initiative

Aaron Carr is the founder and executive director of the non-profit housing watchdog group Housing Rights Initiative. Aaron’s work has been profiled in the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. Carr is also featured in Season 2, Episode 3 of the Netflix series Dirty Money, which explores HRI’s investigation into Kushner Companies.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?I used to work in the South Bronx. The South Bronx was saturated with real estate fraud, which hurt countless numbers of families. The government wasn’t doing anything about it, so I started a housing watchdog agency to do something about it.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
Upper West Side.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
Investigating affordable housing tax benefit fraud, which doesn’t just hurt tenants, but taxpayers. Everybody should care about this!

Michael Carr

Member, Rosenberg & Estis

Michael Carr – Rosenberg & Estis

Michael Carr is a member of the Litigation Department at Rosenberg & Estis, P.C. After only two years at R&E, he became one of the youngest attorneys in the firm’s history promoted to member. He specializes in residential landlord/tenant matters and advises some of New York City’s most prominent commercial owners, developers, and multi-generational families in both real estate transactions and disputes.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
My father was in construction and that introduced me to the business of real estate. When I was a newly minted attorney, just out of law school, my landlord asked me to handle some landlord/tenant cases. I enjoy the intricacy of the procedures and the art of the negotiation. When you are dealing with apartment buildings, it usually involves different specialists, so I am always broadening my experience.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
I love Carroll Gardens in Brooklyn. Carroll Gardens is like a suburb in the city with gorgeous tree-lined streets and everything from neighborhood bakeries to world-class restaurants within walking distance. When I lived in Carroll Gardens, I walked the Brooklyn Heights Promenade often to take in the views. You can see the Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan Bridge, Williamsburg Bridge, 59th Street Bridge, and amazing views of Downtown Manhattan.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
The new East Side Access project is one of the most important developments in the city in decades. I wasn’t directly involved in the project but as someone who now commutes from Long Island, it has been truly transformative. Although it took decades to build, it has modernized one of the busiest train lines in America, cut down commuting time, and created a beautiful new terminal.

Fred leads the Construction Division. Both brothers are actively involved in the financing, acquisition, planning, and development of future projects.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
While growing up, we always had interest in real estate as our father Nourollah speculated in real estate in NYC and Tehran. After graduating from business school, and Tom had finished basic training for the US Army reserves in 1969, together we created a fund for wealthy Iranians to invest in the US. We worked together renovating three brownstones on the UWS, and learned the business by immediate immersion.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
The West Village is no doubt a favorite, with much of our company history based there. We also love LIC, where we were one of the earliest real estate companies to see the value in the neighborhood. We have now developed seven buildings with 3200 apartments in the neighborhood, which spurred the massive explosion of housing in LIC.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
We are currently developing a three building, mixed-use project at the tip of LIC. The project requires extensive site work, waterfront preservation work, new roads and new infrastructure, and we have worked closely with many NYC and NYS agencies. The project will bring 1300 apartments – of which 390 are affordable – local retail space, parking, and an abundance of new public park space. Our objective is to continue building a vibrant and attractive neighborhood.

Rachel Fee

Executive Director, New York Housing Conference

Rachel Fee – New York Housing Conference

Rachel Fee is the executive director of the New York Housing Conference, a nonprofit affordable housing policy and advocacy organization that supports safe, decent, and affordable housing for all New Yorkers. With nearly 20 years of experience in the industry, Ms. Fee is one of New York’s most prominent housing advocates and consistently works to improve housing policy and expand resources at the city, state, and federal levels.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
I have always cared deeply about social justice issues, and while housing is a basic human need, affordable housing is out of reach for many New Yorkers. I joined the Department of Housing Preservation and Development in 2004. There I saw how connecting vulnerable New Yorkers with high-quality housing can improve their safety, physical and mental well-being, and economic success. It’s been my mission ever since to advocate for policies that create those connections.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
Soho in Manhattan and Gowanus in Brooklyn tie for my favorite New York City neighborhoods at the moment. Their respective rezonings will create thousands of new units of affordable housing in affluent neighborhoods with great schools. They represent exactly the kind of land use reform New York needs to promote racial and economic justice. Plus, they are each very cool neighborhoods to explore. The annual Gowanus Open Studios offers a peek at local artists in action.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
Last year, the NYHC developed the NYC Housing Tracker to track affordable production and the economic need for housing in each borough and New York City Council District. Its initial release was in May 2022, with an update coming soon. Every neighborhood must do its part to help solve the city’s affordable housing crisis. We’ve found it’s a way to ensure our elected officials are held accountable for creating more housing in their districts.

Ken Fisher

Member, Cozen O’Connor

Ken Fisher – Cozen O’Connor

Ken Fisher is a member of the national law firm of Cozen O’Connor. Ken’s practice concentrates on New York real estate development, zoning, litigation, and investigations.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
Real estate is to New York what oil is to Texas! But it’s also one of the most heavily regulated industries. Since being a young lawyer, I’ve had an interest in navigating those rules. It’s very gratifying to look at skylines you helped shape, and also satisfying to help prevent a client from being strangled by red tape.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
I’d have to say Brooklyn Heights, New York’s first historic district. It’s still predominantly charming brownstones but with development all around it, in the tech/creative hub in DUMBO, the tens of thousands of new apartments in Downtown Brooklyn, and the transformative Brooklyn Bridge Park on the East River waterfront. So some of the most dynamic areas of New York are only steps from one of the calmest.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
A big focus the last few years has been helping to shape – and win approval for – the Gowanus rezoning. It will transform what has been a neglected industrial area into thousands of apartments, waterfront open space, artist studios, and galleries. My clients and I worked closely with both the City and community stakeholders, and I got to draw on all of my experience in land use, development, and even litigating against the NIMBYs.

Winston Fisher

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
Fisher Brothers is a family-owned business that has excelled in real estate innovation, developing, owning, and operating unique spaces for more than a century. I am proud to be a member of the third-generation of Fisher leadership as we continue to expand into new and exciting fields which complement our heritage of traditional commercial and residential development and management.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
I grew up in the Upper East Side and love working in Midtown, but my favorite thing about New York is that the city has something for everyone to enjoy. From the amazing food in Astoria, to summers in Coney Island, it is impossible to choose a favorite neighborhood when the city has so many amazing experiences to offer.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
In 2018, we completed a 157-unit luxury condominium at 111 Murray Street in Tribeca. The 64 story residential tower stands 800-feet tall, making it an iconic new addition to the Manhattan skyline. The property features gorgeous views of the city and 20,000 square feet of luxury amenities including a private garden, a fitness center, hammam, 75-foot lap pool, spa and recreation areas for residents of all ages to enjoy.

Bess Freedman

CEO, Brown Harris Stevens

Bess Freedman

Bess oversees 50+ offices and nearly 3,000 agents across New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, and Florida.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
I got my start in real estate after years working as a Legal Aid attorney in NYC. As a new mom, I needed a more flexible schedule that would allow me to earn money and spend time with my children. It took a lot of hard work, but I was able to parlay my passion for helping people into a successful real estate career as an agent and eventually into management.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
I think every neighborhood has something unique to offer, but I have a special place in my heart for the Upper East Side. It’s where I live and where I raised my kids. I love the people, the restaurants, the shopping – and it’s an easy commute to the office where I go everyday.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
We recently celebrated the 150 year anniversary of Brown Harris Stevens with a spectacular party and over 1000 people at The Metropolitan Club in NYC – it was really special to honor this milestone together. We also recently launched our Mastery of the Craft campaign, the biggest and boldest branding initiative in the history of BHS. It was incredibly successful, and allowed us to give our history and legacy a fresh, modern edge.

Dan Garodnick

Director, Department of City Planning

Dan Garodnick – Department of City Planning

Dan Garodnick, appointed by Mayor Adams, began serving as director of the Department of City Planning and chair of the City Planning Commission in February 2022. Garodnick represented the East Side of Manhattan in the City Council for 12 years, where he led the negotiations of the successful Greater East Midtown plan, and efforts to preserve affordable housing in Stuyvesant Town. Garodnick most recently served as president and CEO of the Riverside Park Conservancy.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
I am drawn to the biggest challenges that shape the way people live, work, and play. From a pocket park to the biggest skyscrapers, policy makers enable them through thoughtful plans. During my time in the City Council, I learned how to drive complicated land use matters toward real results. And at City Planning, through citywide and neighborhood plans, we are creating economic opportunities, more housing, and a greener, more resilient, and safer city.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
Hands down, Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village, the neighborhood where I was born and raised.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
As we come out of the pandemic, there are lots of questions about the future of office work, and what to do with vacant space. I recently tackled those questions with a group of experts, and developed office conversion plans that will likely create units for 40,000 people in the next decade. With these changes, we’re meeting the moment – not only ensuring the continued success of our commercial districts, but creating urgently needed housing.

Ethan Geto

Principal, Geto & de Milly. Inc.

Ethan Geto – Geto & de Milly

A born and bred New Yorker, Ethan Geto is a trusted advisor and strategist for Fortune 500 companies, issue advocacy coalitions, real estate developers, and not-for-profit institutions on government affairs, community relations, and strategic communications. Previously, Ethan served at high levels in city, state and federal government – including as NYC Assistant Commissioner of Buildings, legislative aide on Capitol Hill and Senior Policy Advisor to a NYS Attorney General and a Borough President.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
I’ve been involved in social justice activism and politics since my teens in the Bronx. Growing up in a time of turmoil and transition inspired an appreciation for urban planning that strengthens equity and the fabric of communities. A career in government and as a policy consultant has conferred a priceless opportunity to help our city overcome challenges and continue to thrive. Projects our firm helps bring to fruition can last for generations.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
I’m a child of the Bronx and spent my adult years in Chelsea and the Village, where I’ve been involved in civic life, including working to create a striking AIDS Memorial honoring the resiliency of the LGBTQ+ community and the sacrifices of selfless caregivers. Over the last decade, I’ve spent a great deal of time in Gowanus, Brooklyn, which continues to delight with its dynamic mix of culture, engaged residents, artisanal enterprises and energetic nonprofits.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
Partnering with a broad community coalition in Gowanus to hasten a long-overdue environmental cleanup, ensure the creation of more new affordable housing than in any City rezoning, and nurture the arts has been a truly fulfilling experience. In Manhattan, I’m very excited to be helping establish the American Museum of LGBTQ+ History & Culture, the first such museum in the nation.

Esteban Girón

Community Partnerships Steward, Crown Heights Tenant Union

Esteban Giron – Crown Heights Tenant Union

Esteban Giron is a tenant organizer with the Crown Heights Tenant Union, an autonomous union in Crown Heights, Brooklyn now celebrating its ten year anniversary. He serves on the Tenants PAC Board of Directors and the BK CB9 Land Use Committee. Esteban has spent the past decade fighting landlords, developers, politicians, and others who want to profit from the displacement of his neighbors, and looks forward to another decade of this work.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
I saw that to succeed in keeping my neighbors housed, I needed to act across multiple fronts. That meant hopping on a bus to Albany to lobby for stronger tenant protections, engaging in my local community board to fend off the luxury development that would displace us, navigating housing court with my most vulnerable neighbors, and getting our message heard through the media.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
I’m proud of the work CHTU, BED and other tenant-led groups did in preventing covid-era evictions. We saved lives and proved that an #EvictionFreeNY is possible. We accomplished this through both legislation and direct eviction defense. As a member of coalitions like Right to Counsel and Housing Justice for All, CHTU is now fighting for policies like Good Cause Eviction and the Winter Eviction Moratorium, working towards a city free of evictions, dispossession, and homelessness.

Like so many of her fellow New Yorkers, Hsu-Chen is a first generation immigrant. She started her career as an intern at the agency in 1997.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
I’ve spent my career at DCP – where extraordinary professionals work with public and private partners to help build New York’s brightest future. Whether through new housing, jobs, green energy, resilient infrastructure, transit, or open space, my focus is always on how to improve the lives of those who call this city home. It’s an honor and thrill to work with New Yorkers from all corners of the city to take on our biggest challenges.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
I love them all the same!

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
I’m proud to have helped establish the Community Planning and Engagement division at City Planning. This new team will focus on centering New Yorkers’ voices in our planning work. From our youth engagement curriculum to get kids involved in advocating for their communities, to new webtools to share useful info with New Yorkers, such as our Equitable Development Data Explorer, this dynamic division will help foster conversations on our city’s future.

Steven James

President and CEO, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices New York Properties

Steven James  – Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices New York Properties

Steven James is the president and CEO of BHHSNYP’s City brokerage. In addition to fronting a myriad of the area’s most substantial listings/sales, his oversight includes mentoring and supporting agents to reach the next level in their careers. Along with supervising the NYC offices, his reach extends to strategic growth and acquisition opportunities. Prior to BHHSNYP, James served as executive director of Brokerage Development for HomeServices of America, and president and CEO of Douglas Elliman’s NYC brokerage and director of sales.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
I first moved to New York to pursue acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Years later, I changed career paths to work at a Scarsdale Real Estate company. With my acting background, I utilized techniques from class to find what my clients really wanted and needed in their homes; I immediately found success in the field and soon began working on the Upper West Side, as at that time, you needed to live where you sell.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
Each part of the Upper West Side is unique, and the housing stock is just terrific. It is a neighborhood where its residents really care about the wellbeing of their neighbors, retail spaces, and parks. When you find a place like that, you don’t want to lose it. When I first started working in real estate, I barely needed to sell the neighborhood as I was already intrinsically connected to it.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
Coming from 3,000 agents at Elliman, working hands-on with 100 agents and growing the firm at Berkshire Hathaway has been extremely rewarding. My favorite part of what I do is working with our agents on the nitty-gritty of their deals. Before my focus was on more corporate activities, but at Berkshire Hathaway I have a great team to always be there for the agents. It’s been so meaningful to experience the deals again.

Ninve James

Senior Vice President of Residential Brokerage Services & Products, Real Estate Board of New York

Ninve James – Real Estate Board of New York

Ninve James leads REBNY’s work to support residential brokerage members across New York City, including oversight of REBNY’s Residential Listing Service, Residential Brokerage Events and Program, and Residential Professional Development. She led REBNY’s work with CoStar Group to launch and operate Citysnap, the first-ever consumer-facing search website and mobile app for REBNY’s RLS. Previously, Ninve served as vice president of Realtor.com and was a member of the New York City founding team at Trulia.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
Out of college, while Ninve was looking to apply to law school, she took a job at Realtor.com in online advertising sales. She learned a lot about the industry and quickly realized this was her passion. 20 years later, she continues to find satisfaction each day knowing that she’s making a difference in her work at REBNY by driving the industry forward through her current initiatives.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
Living in New York City, the most incredible city in the entire world, makes it difficult for Ninve to name just one favorite neighborhood. Depending on what Ninve is looking for at a given time, she may say Long Island City, where she loves to come home to and spend time with her family at Gantry Plaza State Park; or West Village where she often goes to dine out and window shop.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
Ninve led REBNY’s work with CoStar Group to launch Citysnap, the first-ever consumer-facing search website and mobile app for REBNY’s Residential Listing Service, ending decades of brokers having to use third party platforms with minimal oversight and regulation to promote their listings. For consumers, Citysnap is the first platform to feature all data from the RLS, giving New Yorkers better, more accurate, and more comprehensive content.

Suri Kasirer

President, Kasirer

Suri Kasirer – Kasirer

Suri Kasirer is a born New Yorker and advocate. She founded Kasirer in 1997 out of a studio apartment on the UWS – and a lifelong commitment to championing people, progress, and policy in the city. Suri grew her business into the #1 lobbying firm in NYC, assembling and leading a team with decades of experience and an unrivaled fluency in government on local and state levels, in languages, and in the inner workings of New York.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
Kasirer began doing land use for our nonprofit clients, starting with a competitive RFP to develop a parcel of Columbus Circle for a museum we represented. After winning the RFP, the city said we had to go through ULURP where we were met with resistance from the community and preservationists. This excited me about land use, the possibilities of development, and the intricacies of dealing with government and the community in a complex political environment.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
The Upper West Side

Brian Kavanagh

Senator, New York State Senate

kavanagh-b-headshot

Senator Brian Kavanagh represents more than 330,000 residents in New York’s Senate District 27, covering lower Manhattan from the Battery to 14th Street. As chair of the Senate Committee on Housing, Construction, and Community Development, Brian has built on his decades of advocating for access to high quality, safe, affordable housing for all New Yorkers.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
I’m partial to the neighborhoods in my district, which includes Battery Park City, Chinatown, the East and South Villages, the Financial District, Little Italy, the Lower East Side, Greenwich Village, SoHo, NoHo and Tribeca.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
I am currently advocating to include $250 million in the adopted budget for FY 2023-2024 for the Housing Access Voucher Program to provide rental support for homeless families and those at risk of imminent loss of their housing. Over 90,000 New Yorkers are currently homeless and many more experience homelessness during the course of a year. Providing rental vouchers will be cheaper, safer, healthier, than continuing to rely on our existing shelter systems.

A Queens native who grew up in Forest Hills, Paula serves on the boards of several Queens-based organizations including the Queens Public Library, the Queens Museum, and Mount Sinai Queens.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
My grandfather, Louis Pfohl, was an architect, so I was exposed to architecture at a young age. For most of my life, I was more interested in the art and culture of cities than in real estate. It was only after I joined Plaxall and I began to read some of the great books about cities (Triumph of the City and The Power Broker) that I developed a passion for urban planning and development.

Jesse Lazar

Interim Executive Director, AIA New York

Jesse Lazar – AIA New York

Jesse Lazar is the Interim Executive Director of AIA New York, the oldest and largest chapter of the AIA representing nearly 5,000 members. He also directs the Center for Architecture, the leading cultural venue for the built environment in New York City. He has been with both organizations since 2014. Jesse holds an MBA from the University of Michigan and a B.A. from George Washington University, and lives in Brooklyn with his husband.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
As both the son and grandson of union steamfitters in Philadelphia, I’ve always had a special interest in buildings and respect for the people who transform them from an idea into a reality, which is why I’ve worked with architects, planners, engineers, and related professionals to make New York’s built environment more dynamic, more sustainable, and more equitable throughout my career.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
Even though I’ve lived in and truly loved Brooklyn since I first came to New York City sixteen years ago, my favorite neighborhood is Jackson Heights, Queens. It’s a perfect encapsulation of everything that’s special about New York: it’s dense and transit-oriented, with lively and exciting streets, an almost unimaginable diversity of people, incredible food, raucous nightlife, and beautiful and interesting buildings. And Queens Pride is one of my favorite annual events!

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
In May 2022 the Center for Architecture hosted an affordable housing conference, bringing together developers, officials, journalists, activists, and experts on a vital issue facing all New Yorkers. I’m proud that we are continuing to push this issue, from supporting the governor’s housing compact, to developing programs about supportive housing, to convening a wide variety of stakeholders who know we need more housing with a focus on equity, affordability, and good design.

Mark Levine

Manhattan Borough President, The Office of the Manhattan Brough President

Mark Levine – The Office of the Manhattan Brough President

Mark Levine is the Manhattan Borough President. Previously, he was the council member representing West Harlem/Hamilton Heights, Morningside Heights, and parts of the Upper West Side and Washington Heights. On the council, Mark was a leading voice for tenants’ rights and housing – passing the first-in-the-nation Right to Counsel law for New Yorkers facing eviction. Prior to the council, Mark founded a community credit union in Washington Heights and was a PS middle school teacher.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
As a teacher in the South Bronx, an organizer in the Heights, and a city council member, I saw how it was tough for New Yorkers to find an apartment they could afford. And then how quickly they could lose it to an eviction. I was motivated by the precarity that too many of our neighbors face, unsure if they’ll be able to fight unjust eviction cases.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
Washington Heights – I’ve lived there for more than two decades, and I’ve never left because I love all that it has to offer, from a tight-knit community, to amazing food, to great views of the Hudson. It was a wonderful place to raise my two kids and holds so many wonderful memories.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
Housing Manhattanites, a new report from my office, gives me so much hope for the future of our borough. We identified 170+ vacant or underbuilt lots and nine neighborhoods where we could update zoning. Collectively, these sites could produce more than 73,000 new apartments, and 30,000+ of them would be affordable. Investing in these developments would mean that low-income and working-class Manhattanites would finally have a shot at securing an apartment they can actually afford.

Jeffrey Levine

Founder and Chairman, Douglaston Development

Jeffrey Levine – Douglaston Development

Jeffrey Levine is the founding principal and chairman of The Douglaston Companies, consisting of Douglaston Development, Levine Builders, and Clinton Management. Since 1979, Mr. Levine has directed the new construction or rehabilitation of thousands of residential units, including both affordable and market rate housing, student housing, hotels, senior living, healthcare facilities, and millions of square feet of commercial retail, office, and institutional spaces.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
As a high school student, during the summers, I worked for construction trades in New York and continued that work through college at the School of Architecture at City College. During that time, I found I had an affinity for building, which led me to establish my own construction company, Levine Builders, in 1979 at the age of 25. That has now grown into an organization that develops, builds, and manages properties in the five boroughs.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
Life is about balancing both living and working. I very much enjoy living in the West Village because it has the feeling of a true neighborhood and community. Simultaneously, I enjoy working within Penn Plaza due to its connectivity and access to the rest of New York City.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
We recently completed our largest project to date, 3Eleven, the largest new multifamily building in Manhattan. It comprises 938 units, 30% of which are affordable, and over 60,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor amenities. It is exciting to continue growing our footprint in the West Chelsea neighborhood, where we’ve seen tremendous success with Ohm, located across the street.

Frank Marino

CEO, Marino

Frank Marino – Marino

Frank Marino has built and scaled Marino’s real estate and property innovation practice over the last 30 years, playing an integral role in shaping the narrative surrounding some of the most iconic names in the industry. Together with the firm’s award-winning team, Frank – a member of REBNY’s Board of Governors – has developed and executed results-oriented, comprehensive communications strategies for a dynamic roster of clients, and has worked on some of the city’s most consequential projects.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
Before launching Marino in 1993, I served in the administration of NYC Mayor Ed Koch as senior vice president for Public Affairs, Media Relations and Marketing for what is now the New York Economic Development Corporation. I also previously served as a senior manager in the New York State Assembly and a political campaign consultant. When I started Marino, it was only natural that much of our work was focused in the real estate industry.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
Thanks to my work in city government, I had a chance to work in many neighborhoods across the five boroughs. As a Bronx boy growing up, my heart remains with Throgs Neck as the city’s best neighborhood, which stems from my love of the beach. It also has a small-town feel in a big city, a vibrant commercial district along East Tremont Avenue, and provides great access to the rest of the tri-state region.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
Through our work with developer LCOR, I had the opportunity to work with our team to promote the launch of 1515 Surf Avenue, the largest geothermal project to date in NYC history. Upon completion, the development reduces carbon emissions by over 60%, and brings market rate and affordable housing – with great views of the Atlantic – as well as ground-floor retail space to the Brooklyn community, serving as a model for residential developments across the country.

John has overseen business growth of 20% over the last year, with Marino now considered among the mid-sized agency elite nationwide. Under his leadership, Marino’s work within the real estate innovation space has also grown exponentially.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
With my father’s background spearheading the city’s efforts to promote key economic development opportunities, Marino was built with real estate in its DNA. I joined Marino in 2002 and, together with our award-winning team, developed and executed results-oriented comprehensive strategies for our roster of clients, playing an integral role in shaping the narrative surrounding some of the most dynamic names in the industry. Our expertise spans various sectors, including commercial, residential, financial, PropTech, FinTech, and construction.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
I have always really liked the Union Square area in NYC, it feels like a gateway to downtown where many districts come together. Union Square is a true gathering place for business, entertainment, recreation and just living. And working on the development and ultimately the promotion of the park and the district was one of my first assignments in agency life.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
It’s been exciting to work with our team and Jamestown on promoting the redevelopment of One Times Square. Jamestown is building a state-of-the art modern observation deck, revamping the building’s facades to allow for new digital billboards and revitalizing the building’s interior which has been largely empty since the 1970s. It’s the home of the NYE ball drop and one of NY’s most iconic buildings. The building will also set the standard for hybrid physical-digital experiences.

She combines human-centric community development, problem-solving, real estate development, and construction management. In doing so, BLCD can make an impact.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
As a youth, I experienced bouts of homelessness and having a secure place to sleep was a daily obstacle to overcome. With a background as an EMT and nursing, I knew I could help more people from our communities in so many different ways. Housing, education, confidence, and health are all connected to wealth building. I started my own company, Bottom Line Construction & Development, and recently a non-profit, to serve youth from underserved communities.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
Harlem.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
My most recent and accomplished single project would be The Baldwin Park; a 10,000 square foot Boutique Condominium located in the fifth largest zip-code in the country, on 148th Street in Harlem across the street from the historic Jackie Robinson Park. It was named after one of Harlem’s greats, James Baldwin, a poet, and writer of social change impacting people of color.

Jonathan Miller – Miller Samuel Inc.

Jonathan Miller is president and CEO of Miller Samuel Inc., a real estate appraisal and consulting firm he co-founded in 1986, and a professor of market analysis at Columbia University’s MSRED program. Since 1994, he has been the author of an expanding series of U.S. housing market reports for Douglas Elliman Real Estate and a frequent housing market commentator and blogger covering U.S. and regional housing issues.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
After three years in the hotel business out of college, I decided it wasn’t for me and pivoted into real estate brokerage. My father had been a real estate developer/broker in Delaware. I eventually moved to Manhattan and found my way into a residential real estate brokerage sales office for a new condo development. I noticed all the appraisers were coming in with little data. That’s how we got the idea to start an appraisal company.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
Before moving to Connecticut, my wife and I lived on the Upper West Side. Multiple subway lines made it easy to get around, and there were plenty of coffee shops and restaurants to frequent. Strolling along Broadway was one of our favorite ways to spend an evening. The iconic Emery Roth buildings that front Central Park West are spectacular. Best of all, we lived near Lincoln Center and often went to see operas and ballets.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
As housing market appraisers and analysts, we’re always trying to bring transparency to the public. We just published an extensive compendium of the apartment sales market known as The Elliman Report: 2013-2022 Manhattan Decade.

Michele de Milly

Principal, Geto & de Milly. Inc.

Prior to co-founding Geto & de Milly, Michele led communications and government affairs for the New York State Urban Development Corporation/Empire State Development.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
Since my days on the governmental side of urban development, it has been a thrill to help shape the built environment of New York – from championing new architectural icons to promoting open space and housing, to advancing sustainable projects that address climate change. It’s humbling and gratifying to work with the best minds in the public, private and nonprofit sectors on projects that ensure beautiful, functional and equitable places for residents and families to live, work, and play.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
Both my co-founder Ethan and I are true “Downtowners,” having made our homes in Chelsea and the East Village. Working on the revitalization of Manhattan’s South Street Seaport has occasioned spending enjoyable time in that unique neighborhood, at events at Pier 17, and shopping at the new Jean-Georges Tin Building Marketplace. I’ll also throw in Kensington, Brooklyn, which I frequent with the youngest members of my family, and which feels like a second home.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
I’m extremely proud to be part of the effort that brought MLS soccer to NYC and to now work with the Adams Administration, local elected officials, and community stakeholders to realize the vision of a dedicated soccer stadium, substantial affordable housing, a public school, and so much more in Willets Point, Queens. I’m always inspired to work on generating funding for our outstanding nonprofit clients, who provide crucial services to the most vulnerable New Yorkers.

Ross chairs Stroock’s DEI Council and recently received NYSBA’s John E. Higgins Diversity Trailblazer Award.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
Often our family picks neighborhoods throughout NYC to explore, and of course to find a great meal, so I have many favorites. At this present moment, the West Village is a leading neighborhood in my book, but overall, it has to be the Upper West Side, where I have lived in three apartments over 38 years.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
Representing the South Street Seaport Museum over the last three years on a pro bono matter involving its renovation and funding programs has been extremely enjoyable. I have been working downtown for more than 30 years and only recently discovered the significance of the museum, the beauty of its ships and the incredible work it does to educate people about the origins of New York City.

Miki Naftali

CEO and Chairman, Naftali Group

Miki Naftali – Naftali Group

Miki Naftali is the chairman and CEO of Naftali Group, the privately-owned global real estate development and investment firm. Over his 35-year career, Mr. Naftali has acquired, developed, and managed over $15B and 30M square feet in real estate. Known for spearheading projects that raise the standard for developments, he has assembled a portfolio of 25 luxury condominiums in NYC alone, as well as other assets, including multi-family and mixed-use, with more in the pipeline.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
While attending USC, I worked as a property manager and the owner asked me to find them another investment. I presented a building that I thought was a great value-add and they purchased it. Not only did that experience draw me to real estate development, but it also led me to understand that value isn’t always visible and if I can find a good opportunity to invest, I can bring a vision to life.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
This question is like asking a parent which of their children is their favorite. I love every part of New York City, but if I had to pick my favorite neighborhoods, they would be the Upper East Side, Upper West Side, West Village, and Williamsburg. Each of these neighborhoods has its own unique history and charm, how could I pick just one?

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
The recent projects I have enjoyed working on are our boutique condominiums on Madison Avenue, The Bellemont and The Benson, and 200 East 83rd on Third Avenue. We were bullish on the UES because we saw an opportunity to bring great design, desirable layouts, and stylish amenities to a market that was missing this kind of new residential product. Alongside our partners RAMSA and Achille Salvagni, we brought our vision to life with record-breaking results.

Marc Norman

Associate Dean and Professor, NYU Schack Institute of Real Estate

Marc Norman – NYU Schack Institute of Real Estate

Marc Norman is the founder of consulting firm Ideas and Action, the Larry & Klara Silverstein Chair in Real Estate Development & Investment, and Associate Dean of the Schack Institute of Real Estate at NYU. He has over 25 years of experience in community development and finance working for for-profit and nonprofit organizations, consulting firms and investment banks, and currently consults with organizations throughout the United States and the world.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
I’m trained as an urban planner. While getting my Masters at UCLA I was drawn to the professors of practice who were teaching us about the built environment while working as developers. They conveyed to me that understanding finance and being part of the development team was one of the best ways to shape a city. My first job was with an affordable housing developer rehabbing historic hotels into permanent supportive housing. They were right!

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
Williamsburg! I moved there in 1997 and still live there today. While it would be great to live closer to Prospect or Central Park, my neighborhood represents my ideal New York.  A mix of incomes, races and housing types where I know the business owners and my neighbors.  It also has my favorite bike shop, restaurant, bar and barbershop all within 3 blocks.  While it’s changed a lot, it is still a wonderful neighborhood.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
Through my consulting firm Ideas and Action, I worked with the Corporation for Supportive Housing last year looking at impediments and opportunities for BIPOC developers of affordable housing. It involved analyzing the Low Income Housing Qualified Allocation Plans for 7 different states and holding focus groups of developers from around the country about what they are seeing in the market. Getting that insight, post covid and pre-rate hikes, was fun and insightful.

Shaun Osher is the CEO and founder of CORE, the number one boutique real estate marketing and sales company in New York. Shaun is widely recognized as an innovative and creative marketing and branding expert, with over 50 projects and $10 billion in sales under his leadership. A native of Johannesburg, South Africa, Shaun graduated from The New School in 1994.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
I came to the US to pursue a career as a jazz musician. After getting a music degree at The New School, I began working professionally. As my gigs were at night, I had my days open to work. Real estate, with its flexibility, proved to be a good fit. But I never gave up my sax – I still play every day.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
I am partial to those I have called home – the Village, West Village and Hudson Square areas. It’s the heart of New York – or, at least, my New York. I went to college there, played in every club there, and made it my home for many years. And if I go out for the night, I guarantee you will find me there hitting the Vanguard or grabbing a bite at Jeffrey’s Grocery.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
There are too many I have enjoyed for a variety of reasons. The Cortland, Rose Hill, The Marlow, The Harper, Wonderlofts – there are too many to name. A few years ago, I committed to myself and my team to only work with developers we respect, and on projects we believe in. If you believe in your work and the people you are doing it with, the process will always generate the best result. Always.

Brenda Rosen

President and CEO, Breaking Ground

Brenda Rosen – Breaking Ground

Brenda Rosen has devoted her career to advancing proven solutions to homelessness through the supportive housing model. She joined Breaking Ground in 1999 and has served as CEO since 2011. Under her leadership, Breaking Ground has more than doubled its permanent apartments for individuals exiting homelessness, expanding opportunities for people to come off the streets and into housing. Prior to Breaking Ground, she was an attorney for the New York City Department of Homeless Services.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
When I was a child, my family had a brief brush with homelessness when a fire destroyed our apartment, an experience that has driven a lifelong interest in housing and homelessness. New York City is the country’s oldest, largest, and most exciting urban experiment, and while we are constantly reinventing NYC, Breaking Ground exists to ensure that the most vulnerable among us are not forgotten. Because homelessness is fundamentally a housing problem.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
Roosevelt Island (“the rock”) was a hidden oasis in the 70s and 80s. We had one street, one chapel, tons of open space, one school, and a tram. Separated from the rest of NYC, we were a close community where neighbors took care of one another. Days were spent outside playing paddleball, soccer, tag, and baseball. We still have yearly reunions and “original RIers” return from all over the world to show each other love.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
90 Sands in DUMBO, Brooklyn is an extraordinary project. Breaking Ground’s first hotel conversion in over two decades, 90 Sands has nearly 500 units of permanent supportive and affordable housing in one of NY’s most expensive neighborhoods, representing the second largest such site in the nation. And we worked closely with the City to pilot a program that has meaningfully reduced the time it takes for people to go from homeless to housed.

Howard Rothschild

President, Realty Advisory Board on Labor Relations

Howard Rothschild – Realty Advisory Board on Labor Relations

Howard Rothschild has represented the real estate industry for nearly 40 years, and he currently serves as president of the Realty Advisory Board. He represents the industry in labor negotiations, arbitrations, Federal and State Courts, and administrative agencies. He was counsel in a case before the US Supreme Court that cemented arbitration as a foundation for organized labor relations. Howard also serves as an officer and trustee on the SEIU, Local 94, IUOE Funds and Committees.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
During law school I became interested in labor law and the RAB seemed like a great place to start my career. Over the years I’ve worked on hundreds of interesting projects, but the collegial atmosphere of the people in the industry has been the true driver of my work and why I am still at the RAB four decades later. I have tremendous admiration for the industry and all the great people in it.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
Forest Hills. It was where my wife and I lived when we got married and our daughter was born, and it holds a special place for me. It was an easy commute to Manhattan, Long Island and Shea Stadium. I still remember Beefsteak Charlies, but never ate the unlimited shrimp.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
In 2022 we negotiated two large CBAs covering 32,000 Local 32BJ members in 3200 apartment buildings and with Local 94, covering about 5,600 members in 1700 commercial buildings and schools. Both agreements were successfully completed, giving employees the largest ever wage increase and/or the largest bonus with minimal cost impact to employers. These contracts were a win for our employees, the union, and our employers.

Andrew Schwartz

Co-President, New York Region, The Howard Hughes Corporation

Andrew Schwartz – The Howard Hughes Corporation

As co-president of the New York region, Mr. Andrew Schwartz leads the continued revitalization of the Seaport with a focus on strategic partnerships and programming. He joined HHC in 2015 with more than two decades of experience managing strategic marketing partnerships, advertising campaigns, and events, including for Brooklyn Sports and Entertainment, SiriusXM, Major League Baseball, New Jersey Devils, and the National Hockey League. Schwartz earned a B.S. in Communications and Marketing from the University of Connecticut.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
Over the past seven years, the Seaport has grown into one of New York City’s most sought-after neighborhoods – and it’s easily my favorite, with its historic cobblestone streets and sweeping waterfront views. We have some of the best, most exciting dining destinations in the city, along with a constantly evolving lineup of popular events and programs in a neighborhood that can serve as a model for resilient design.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
Spearheading the company’s partnership platforms, I developed a wide array of programming and activations, notably The Rooftop at Pier 17® Summer Concert Series. After four successful seasons, the 3,500-capacity performance venue recently ranked the #3 Top Club Worldwide by Pollstar. Planning is underway for the fifth Summer Concert Series as we continue to establish the Seaport as one of New York City’s top entertainment destinations.

Ryan Serhant

Founder and CEO, SERHANT.

Ryan Serhant – SERHANT.

Ryan Serhant is a founder, entrepreneur, producer, public speaker, best-selling author, star of multiple TV shows, and Chief Executive Officer of SERHANT., the rapidly growing tech-forward real estate organization comprised of two core businesses: brokerage and education. Founded in 2020, SERHANT. is a content-to-commerce technology ecosystem and is home to the first full-service, award-winning, in-house film studio solely dedicated to real estate content. Its digital education platform has more than 14,000 members across 110 countries.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
I got into the real estate industry by accident. I moved to NYC in 2006 to pursue acting, but I needed something to help pay the bills. I began working on rentals and eventually moved to sales, where I led the number one selling team in NYC for several years before branching out on my own and starting SERHANT.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
There are so many amazing neighborhoods in NYC, but I think I’d have to go with SoHo. It offers an amazing vibrancy from its cast-iron architecture, shopping, amazing restaurants and art galleries, plus that’s where our NYC headquarters is, SERHANT. House New York. Its residents have the privilege of living in one of the city’s cultural centers.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
Each project is different in its own way, but one of the most exciting things I am working on right now is exclusively listing the Penthouse at Central Park Tower, the tallest residence in the world and currently the most expensive listing in the country at $250 million. A listing like this is one-of-a-kind, and truly becomes a full-time job, requiring exact precision, and creativity that goes above and beyond.

Eddie Shapiro

Founder, President, and CEO, Nest Seekers

Eddie Shapiro – Nest Seekers

Eddie Shapiro is the founder, president, and CEO of Nest Seekers International, the fastest growing privately held brokerage in the world. Under his direction, the company has grown to include 1500 professionals in 30 offices across the globe. Mr. Shapiro revolutionized the real estate industry by introducing a multi-market approach, leveraging television as a promotional tool, and launching Nest Media to develop and produce television shows for streaming and broadcast networks. Additionally, he founded Nest Yachts, Nest Jets, and Nest Fine Arts to provide clients with hard asset trading and management services. In his personal life, Mr. Shapiro is a devoted husband and father of three.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
I have always been an entrepreneurial person with an interest in real estate. I started my career in the early 90’s as an agent at a small firm in midtown Manhattan. I loved helping clients make informed decisions about their investments and building long-term relationships with them. It soon became my mission to launch an innovative real estate firm that would redefine how real estate is traded, and Nest Seekers was born.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
I love every neighborhood for different reasons. One that stands out is Noho because it has all the best elements of the city: great food, vibrant culture, and historic architecture. While NOHO occupies only a few blocks, it proves that less is more. The neighborhood is nestled just above SOHO’s bustle and is home to some of the city’s most acclaimed restaurants. With an incredible location, NOHO has it all.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on?
I launched Nest Media to develop and produce original content, and I am working on some incredible television shows. I developed and executive produced the HBO Max television series, “Selling the Hamptons,” BBC’s “Crazy Rich Agents,” and multiple shows in various stages of production and development. Producing TV has been a rewarding experience for me and a great opportunity to explore new ideas, collaborate with other creatives, and bring exciting concepts to life.

Aaron Sirulnick

Chairman of the Board of Directors, Rent Stabilization Association

Aaron Sirulnick – Rent Stabilization Association

Aaron Sirulnick is a fourth-generation affordable housing provider in New York City. For over 100 years, the Sirulnick family has strongly believed in a balanced housing market that allows property owners to provide safe and adequate housing to the city’s millions of tenants. Since 2013, Aaron has proudly served as the chairman of the Board of Directors of the Rent Stabilization Association.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
After I graduated college, I was eager to join my family’s business and continue the generational legacy that my great-grandfather started in 1909. I couldn’t think of anything I’d rather do than work with my father and grandfather, and further their efforts to own and manage NYC housing.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
It’s funny because growing up, I never knew there was anything below Canal Street – now that entire area is thriving, energized, and the place to be. Both of my kids found that out a lot quicker than I did!

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
We were part of a ground-up development in Astoria that was really a departure from what I was used to – opening up opportunities and daily adventures that had real options and solutions. When the project was complete, and people started to move in, it was thrilling to see it all come together.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
I was inspired by my mother, Ruth, a single mom and a real estate agent. For years, I saw her struggle because she didn’t have the tools or support she needed to best serve her clients. I saw real estate agents as an inspiring group of entrepreneurs who were underappreciated, under invested in, and did not have any company fighting for them. That is one of the main reasons I founded Compass.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
Fort Greene, Brooklyn, because it represents so much of what is great about New York. It’s diverse and vibrant, with renowned cultural institutions and a thriving entertainment scene – all anchored by a refreshingly tight-knit community of old and new residents. I’m a runner, and with Fort Greene Park nearby, it’s a beautiful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
I am deeply excited about reigniting culture and community at Compass. We’re an in-person business built on collaboration, and I am pleased to say we’re fully back in-person. I’m proud of what we have accomplished together, and I believe Compass can show other companies how to get back to what made us great before Covid.

Howard Slatkin

Executive Director, Citizens Housing & Planning Council

Howard Slatkin – Citizens Housing & Planning Council

Howard Slatkin brings to CHPC over two decades of experience at the intersection of housing and planning. He previously served as deputy executive director for Strategic Planning at the New York City Department of City Planning, where he oversaw planning and policy development with a focus on housing supply and affordability, growth, and sustainability. Howard has led planning initiatives that have produced tens of thousands of housing units, zoning changes to promote green buildings, and more.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
I grew up in the suburbs, in the shadow of the city, but it wasn’t until I moved here after college that I became fascinated by the intricacies of planning and the controlled chaos that gives the city life. Planning touches everything – from housing, to parks, to work, and nightlife – and shapes every New Yorker’s life in ways both clear and obscure. Since that fascination dawned on me, it hasn’t dimmed through my whole career.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
In my line of work, we can’t play favorites when it comes to neighborhoods! But I will always have a particular attachment to Greenpoint and Williamsburg, Brooklyn, where I spent so much of my time on the ground early in my career.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
While at City Planning, I was focused on reforms that can enable the city to meet the housing needs created by historic population and job growth. It’s invigorating to see the attention these issues are receiving today, between the governor’s Housing Compact and the mayor’s City of Yes initiatives. I’m excited to build on CHPC’s own Onward and Upward report and help shape productive City-State cooperation to tackle our housing crisis.

Jamie Smarr

President and CEO, NYC Housing Partnership

Jamie Smar – NYC Housing Partnership

During Jamie Smarr’s public service career, he has helped create more than 4,000 units of affordable housing, 3,000 public school seats, and one million square feet of new residential, office and retail space. Prior to being with the NYC Housing Partnership, he also was an executive for the nonprofit real estate developer NHP Foundation. He also served as executive director of the NYC Educational Construction Fund, and worked at HPD for many years.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
My first job in the 1990s, after Harvard graduate school, was Director of Tax and Zoning Incentives at NYC Housing Preservation and Development. I’ve been involved in either housing or school construction projects ever since then. It’s good to have a career where you can see your physical accomplishments around for a very long time. One derives a sense of pride from seeing New Yorkers use buildings that you worked to help create.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
Harlem. I’ve been a resident since 1999. Harlem is the best part of Manhattan because of its strong artistic and cultural roots, as well as its residential character. And one can get to midtown, or all the way downtown, to either of the business districts in less than 30 minutes on the express trains.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
I worked with a church located in Crown Heights that decided to make its land available for development of affordable housing. The project is truly a “win win” for New Yorkers because it will create a new space for the church, which has been a great cultural resource to Crown Heights for decades, and almost 200 units of permanently affordable housing for New Yorkers.  I hope more religious organizations decide to build affordable housing.

Amir Sobhraj

Co-Managing Partner, Zara Realty Holding Corp.

Amir Sobhraj – Zara Realty Holding Corp

Amir Sobhraj is co-managing partner at Zara Realty Holding Corp., a large Queens-based owner-operator of multifamily assets. He graduated from the Stern School of Business at NYU and earned a Master’s degree in real estate science from the Schack Institute of Real Estate at NYU, specializing in real estate finance and development. He serves on the board of the historic King Manor Museum, is involved in numerous charitable initiatives, and is married with one child.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
Family. Tradition. Passion. Our family overcame significant odds to achieve the American Dream, migrating from Guyana to Queens, working strategically to build up a real estate business to pass down to the next generation. It is our honor to continue the family legacy, applying hard earned lessons in creating quality, safe housing to strengthen the middle class. Our passion is to uplift communities, transforming lives through philanthropy and sustainable, clean energy practices that improve the environment.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
Jamaica, Queens. Whether you’re looking for great food, shopping, culture, or outdoor activities, Jamaica is sure to deliver. From the massive Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge to the sprawling Rufus King Park – home to King Manor Museum that celebrates the life and legacy of one of America’s founding fathers, Rufus King – the conveniently located neighborhood provides a wide range of amenities and attractions that make it a great place to live, work, or visit.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
Our new green building overlooking Rufus King Park, a 223-unit 9 story structure will beat New York City’s 2030 climate goals by 40%! This is accomplished by zip-system insulation buoyed by predictive heating and cooling systems that conserves energy. Residents will not only save on utilities but improve the environment through access to electric charging stations for cars and 69 kilowatts of solar energy, the equivalent of taking 282 combustion-engine cars off the road.

The user experience and new interface implemented into the PropertyShark site.

Mauricio Umansky

CEO and Founder, The Agency

Mauricio Umansky – The Agency

Mauricio Umansky is the founder and CEO of The Agency. Mauricio has achieved over $4 billion in real estate sales and holds the distinction of selling the most homes in the country priced above $20M. He has represented some of the world’s most noteworthy properties, including the Playboy Mansion, Walt Disney Estate, and residences owned by Michael Jackson, Michael Jordan, and Prince.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
My wife Kyle Richards suggested we get our real estate licenses together as a weekly date night years ago. I’ve always loved design and architecture and sales has always been a true strength of mine, so it made perfect sense. We signed up for a class at Santa Monica College, and we passed our tests and got our licenses. If not for Kyle’s constant reassurance and support, The Agency would not be here today.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
One of my favorite areas of NYC is Union Square, which is also where our corporate NYC headquarters (The Agency New York) is located. Union Square is centrally located and full of charm and top restaurants, entertainment, a beautiful park, and more. For over a century Union Square has been a gathering place for commerce, entertainment, dining, events, and recreation, and was an obvious choice when deciding on where our NYC headquarters would be.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
Launching The Agency’s own Netflix show, Buying Beverly Hills, was an experience I will never forget. The experience of being able to film with my two daughters, Alexia and Farrah, and showcase to the world our passion for what we do every single day of our lives was extraordinarily fun. This show provides a look inside the deals and listings of our agents, both newer and experienced, and we hope everyone learned something while watching.

Kazimir Vilenchik

Acting Commissioner, NYC Department of Buildings

Kazimir Vilenchik – NYC Department of Buildings

Kazimir Vilenchik, New York State licensed professional engineer, joined the New York City Department of Buildings in October 2008 as a Deputy Borough Commissioner in the Staten Island office. He also served in the Queens, Manhattan, and Brooklyn borough offices before becoming Borough Commissioner of Brooklyn in 2018. Acting Commissioner Vilenchik has over 20 years of experience in the private sector. His previous roles include work as an inspector, structural Engineer, and project manager.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
I attended university for engineering in Belarus, and worked in the private sector for 20 years as an engineer before I came to the Department of Buildings. Working on the regulatory side of the real estate industry has afforded me the opportunity to be involved with thousands of interesting projects across the city.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
My favorite neighborhood in New York City is DUMBO. I was Borough Commissioner at the Department of Buildings in Brooklyn for several years, and have long admired the adaptive reuse of older buildings in the historic district, along with the flurry of new development projects in the neighborhood. To me, DUMBO shows how the developers can incorporate both the old and the new to create an exciting and dynamic neighborhood.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
It is difficult to pick just one. But it is always enjoyable to be involved in large tower projects that are filed with the department. You get to see a lot of individual pieces come together, that culminates in a building that truly changes the skyline of New York City. Just last year we launched the Major Projects Development Program at DOB, which is helping developers coordinate all of the moving pieces and streamlining tower development.

Jed Walentas

CEO, Two Trees Management

Jed Walentas – Two Trees Management

Jed Walentas is one of New York’s most innovative developers of vibrant, mixed-use communities. Under Jed’s leadership, Two Trees has grown to oversee more than four million square feet of commercial and residential real estate. Key projects include the Domino Sugar Factory redevelopment, Domino Park, 300 Ashland, and The Wythe Hotel. Jed also launched The David Prize, which gives $1 million annually to local unrecognized entrepreneurs with big ideas to improve New York City.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
I find it rewarding to create new, exciting urban developments that the public can enjoy. I’ve had an interest in real estate development since I was a young kid, watching my father David Walentas work on redeveloping the DUMBO neighborhood into what it is today.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
Williamsburg has been a major focus. Over the last decade, we’ve been redeveloping the 11-acre former Domino Sugar Factory site from a neglected industrial waterfront into a lively multi-use community, with open space, local retail, affordable housing, elevated architecture, and sustainable design.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
One South First and 325 Kent were the first completed residential buildings in Williamsburg, bringing a lively energy to the neighborhood. Now, we’re focused on building even more housing with the rest of the Domino buildings and eventually River Ring next door. River Ring will deliver more housing and affordable apartments, and another expansive waterfront park. We’re excited to transform this previously underutilized space that will deliver more housing and experiences for New Yorkers.

Cea Weaver

Campaign Coordinator, Housing Justice for All

Cea Weaver – Housing Justice for All

Cea Weaver is the coordinator of Housing Justice for All, a statewide coalition of over 80 grassroots organizations that represent tenants and homeless New Yorkers in their fight for housing policy at the State level. Cea successfully coordinated campaigns to strengthen rent control and win eviction moratoria and other COVID-era housing protections for vulnerable renters and homeless New Yorkers.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
Tenant organizing! I am motivated to correct the power imbalance between tenants and landlords. In my role, I am working alongside tenants and homeless New Yorkers to totally transform the housing system.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
Crown Heights.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
In October 2022, HJ4A took 50 tenants, homeless New Yorkers, legislators, and policy allies to Vienna, Austria to learn about their world-class social housing system. It was tremendously rewarding to experience a place that has a robust social safety net, a commitment to housing as a human right, and a functional public housing system that nearly everyone is eligible for.

Barika Williams

Executive Director, The Association for Neighborhood and Housing Development

Barika Williams – The Association for Neighborhood and Housing Development (ANHD)

Barika X. Williams is the executive director of ANHD, a leading nonprofit focused on ensuring affordable housing and economic justice for all New Yorkers. She is a leader in community development in marginalized communities that advance racial justice. Barika serves on the US Treasury’s Advisory Committee on Racial Equity and previously served as the Assistant Secretary for Housing for the State of New York, worked at the Urban Institute, and in development in Washington, D.C.

What led you to get involved in the real estate industry?
I found my way to real estate because I wanted to enact the large-scale shifts in place and community that hopefully transform our neighborhoods and lives for the better. Our current systems have and continue to fail communities of color that need and deserve something different. At ANHD, I found an organization where we work toward transformational shifts where marginalized communities are powerful, valuable, and vibrant.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
Weeksville, Crown Heights, Brooklyn. I love Weeksville because of its rich Black history and what it means and could be for NYC and Brooklyn. Weeksville was a Black neighborhood founded by freed slaves and grew to be one of the largest free Black communities in pre-Civil War America.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
ANHD has joined forces with the Urban Design Forum to launch a new initiative to enable community groups to activate local public spaces to share culture and encourage belonging in their neighborhood. We want to create pathways for our public spaces – streets, plazas, parks, and community gathering spaces – to reflect under-acknowledged and marginalized histories, celebrate diverse cultural identities, and build powerful community connections that encourage belonging.

Jumaane Williams – Office of the Public Advocate

Winick holds a B.A. from the University of Delaware and a J.D. from New York Law School.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in NYC?
A passion for shaping the city’s built environment and driving economic opportunity, I have always sought to work in places that make New York City a better place to live. Whether you’re breathing new life into an old building, or developing a site from the ground up, there is no better feeling than walking into a property you helped develop and seeing it put to use by the people it was designed to serve.

Describe a recent project you’ve enjoyed working on.
In September, we opened the Tin Building by Jean-Georges—a 53,000-square-foot culinary marketplace featuring an extensive array of locally-sourced food and dining experiences at an iconic waterfront location. The project brings more than 700 new jobs and significant economic benefit to the area, but it also represents a remarkable development feat. After more than eight years of meticulous restoration, the landmarked institution is entering a new chapter as New York’s culinary epicenter.
